This is a really good post for solicitors looking to go it alone for the first time. Only two things I’d add. First, while it is hard you can predict your income from the beginning. When I first set up, I was able to predict my income to /-£300 for each month in the first 12. If you have absolutely no data to guide you then it’s well worth speaking to others who have gone through it.

Secondly, “You wouldn’t go to a business networking event or a party and stand on a stool shouting ‘Stephen Oldham Solicitors is the best motoring law firm for drink driving cases’.” Obviously not (said Nick from London Drink Driving Solicitor) – sorry couldn’t resist.

Very good article. Honest and generous with your thoughts. Life as a sole practitioner can be hard and unpredictable but it is certainly very rewarding being able to help clients cost effectively with a flexible approach. Glad you’re enjoying your new venture.

Thanks for your comments. I am enjoying life as a sole practitioner although sometimes I wonder when I get up before 5am to go off to a far flung court. I hope that my ramblings are helpful for other people in the same boat as me.
